PHONE TRANSCRIPT
DANIEL JAMES – UNKNOWN CALLER – V514
V: You’re running out of time, Daniel.
DJ: Who is this?
V: I know you are, but what am I?
DJ: I’m coming for you, Maas. I haven’t spent the last two years chasing you to just give up.
V: Two years? You think this book began when you took that phone call? [LAUGHTER] It started when you were born. This is what you were created for, paper man!
DJ: What do you mean? What are you talking about?
V: Wake up, Daniel. Wake up.

Note
514. V – the letter Daniel assigns to the unknown caller – is also famously the title of Thomas Pynchon’s debut novel, which concerns, in part, the quest to discover the identity of V, who turns up in a variety of names and guises throughout the narrative, acting as a kind of unifying device, but ultimately remaining forever elusive – Anonymous.
