CIVILIZATION

In certain places, agriculture produced tradable food surpluses. These helped to underwrite a wider range of human activities than had been seen hitherto, from increasing craft specialization to organized religion. Surpluses also helped to fund the building of cities, and the creation – often through warfare – of states and empires. As human societies became more complex, writing and law became essential instruments of administration, while increasingly elaborate hierarchies of power were maintained through force.
