Many people have contributed to the creation of this book. This list, while not exhaustive, highlights those with major roles.
The presidential historians and biographers who have taken part in C-SPAN programs over the past forty years. Forty-three of them are featured here, but they number in the many hundreds, all contributing their scholarship to further public understanding of American history and the presidency. In addition, we thank the more than one hundred historians who have participated in each of the three Historians Surveys of Presidential Leadership, which serve as the organizing principle for this book.
Special thanks to the three historians, Douglas Brinkley, Edna Greene Medford, and Richard Norton Smith, who have helped us greatly with this project, serving as academic advisers for all three presidential leadership surveys and contributing original material.
Our internal editorial team. Katie Lee and Rachel Katz line edited the chapters; Zelda Wallace and Anthony Davis were fact checkers. Rachel Katz also served as production coordinator, selected illustrations, and wrote chapter introductions. Ellen Vest and Leslie Rhodes assisted with photos.
Rob Kennedy, C-SPAN co-CEO, and Dr. Robert X. Browning, executive director of the C-SPAN Video Archives, served as statistical analysts for the three presidential leadership surveys. Rob Kennedy also wrote the survey summaries headlining each chapter.
Our marketing and social media teams, led by vice presidents Marty Dominguez and Peter Kiley with assistance from Howard Mortman, Jeremy Art, Robin Newton, Ed Aymar, Christina Whirl, Katie Lee, and Vanessa Torres.
The website team, with special thanks to Richard Weinstein, Vice President of Digital Media, Stephen Harkness, Tony Laboy, and Alan Cloutier.
The Q & A, Booknotes, and American Presidents editorial and technical teams over the years—especially current Q & A producer Nikhil Raval—led by Programming Vice President Terry Murphy and Programming Operations Vice President Kathy Cahill, who created the original content which forms the basis for our chapters.
The staff of PublicAffairs, our longtime publisher, including our friend Peter Osnos, company founder; executive editor Benjamin Adams, who has edited our last several books; publisher Clive Priddle; the publicity team of Jaime Leifer and Brooke Parsons; and the marketing team of Lindsay Fradkoff and Miguel Cervantes.
C-SPAN Counsel Bruce Collins, who helped with contract and copyright issues.
And, finally, our board of cable CEOs who provide ongoing guidance, and our partners at the nation’s cable, satellite, and telecommunications companies who support our network operations through their affiliate fees and marketing support—a special thank you to you all, on our network’s fortieth anniversary, for making C-SPAN possible.
