I felt nothing, my heart no longer beating in my chest and my soul like a shredded pennant, drifting and useless.
Magic wrapped around me, and the courtyard fell away, the sight of my mates hanging from their nooses fading until a field and forest were in front of me, but I did. Not. Care.
Any emotion had been carved out of me, any sensation snuffed out until I didn’t even feel the cold or the wind that must have been tugging at me, or the damp bleeding into my jeans from the grass. I didn’t care. Why did it even matter? My mates were gone.
A face blurred in front of me, but I saw only those five nooses and my mates swinging. A deep voice filled my ears, but I couldn’t pick out words from the tentative murmur. I didn’t fight as arms wrapped around me and lifted me off the ground. Let them take me to my second death, or Hell, or wherever bad people ended up in the real afterlife.
I didn’t care anymore.
