I wrote the first two scenes of Word Faithful about ten years ago. I was going through a pretty bad breakup, and couldn’t seem to get the girl off my mind. Having never finished the play, I realize now I must have met someone new because, in my experience, you never really get over love until you find a good replacement. In some cases I suppose that doesn’t work either because, I believe, the person you find has to be “better” than the one you left or that left you. There is no elegant way to put it. That’s just how it is. For me. If that new person doesn’t make you forget, she never will. Obviously the word “better” is way too simple. But, like I said, for me, it’s really that simple. I can’t explain it, but I know what it means.
Ten years later, inspired by some of the young actors in the production class, I decided to pick the play back up and finally finished it. Between the director, myself, and the final cast, we chopped away at the old, played with the new, and ultimately came up with what exists now.
