★ Theodore Roosevelt built the West Wing in 1902 so he could work in peace! His kids were always disrupting him in his office. Edith Roosevelt suggested that the second floor of the White House be used only as a home for the president’s family.
★ In 1909, William Taft built the first Oval Office, which was damaged by fire on December 24, 1929. Not a great Christmas present.
★ Herbert Hoover added the first phone to the office in 1929. Before that, the presidents used a phone booth down the hall!
★ Lyndon B. Johnson used a green helicopter seat as his desk chair.
★ Ronald Reagan kept jelly beans in the Oval Office, along with acorns to feed the squirrels outside on the lawn.
★ Franklin D. Roosevelt did not like Americans focusing on his disability. He had a door installed in his desk to cover up his leg braces. This famous picture is of John F. Kennedy Jr. playing in this space.
