Regrouping to Add

Definition

regrouping: Using place value to rename values. For example: 10 ones can be regrouped as 1 ten, and 10 tenths can be regrouped as 1 one.

Regrouping in Addition

Add 0.24 and 0.68.

Step 1: Write the numbers in a column. Line up the decimal points. When the decimal points are lined up, the place values are also lined up.

Step 2: Add the hundredths. 8 + 4 = 12. Regroup 12 hundredths as 1 tenth and 2 hundredths.

Step 3: Add the tenths. Include the regrouped 1 from the hundredths. Bring down the decimal point and add the ones.

Test-Taking Hint

Make notes in your test booklet to help you solve problems. For a problem like the one on the previous page, you can make small marks next to the items on the menu that are being ordered.

Grouping

Addition problems with more than two addends can be done by grouping some of the addends and adding them first.

Add $22.25, $20.75, and $36.15.

Step 1: You can group the first two decimal numbers in this addition problem easily in your head. Think of the decimal part of each money value as quarters. In $22.25, there are 22 dollars and one quarter. In $20.75, there are 20 dollars and 75 cents, or three quarters. Combine those values in your head. One quarter and three quarters is one dollar. There are 22 dollars and 20 dollars, and one more for the combined quarters. 22 + 20 = 1 = $43.00

Step 2: Add the sum of the first two values from step one, $43.00, and the third value, $36.15.
