THEN: PUTTING IT UP (FOUR YEARS AGO)

“A little to the left,” Sheila says. “If you want it centered.”

She sits on my bed monitoring my progress. We measured, we marked, we nailed, and now: the moment of truth.

I nudge the last frame over, to center it. It’s my favorite, from I Timothy 4:12. Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, purity, and faith.

“What do you think?”

“Doesn’t matter what I think,” Sheila says. “It’s your room.”

I climb off the stepladder and back away to take it all in. I spent hours choosing the quotes, designing and printing each page, and then picking out and sizing the matching frames from a series online.

“It’s awesome.”

“There you go,” she says. “We did good.”

“But what do you think?”

Sheila smiles. “Oh, I don’t know. That’s a whole lot of Jesus, Kerm. You sure?”

I was sure.
