October Guest Artist: Jessica Herman Goodson

Art background:

I studied graphic design at the University of Houston. I have been creative and made things my whole life, but going to art school and being a designer gave me tools that have remained useful and vital.

Profession:

Mixed-media artist and maker

What is your art area of concentration?

My focus is on visual journaling and book arts.

List three words that describe you.

Curious, Optimistic, Seeker

What are your three favorite colors?

Mint Green, Teal, Coral

What images continually show up in your work?

Images that appear often in my work are of deer and birds. I see them in my yard daily, which makes them ever more present in my work these days.

When do you journal?

My journal stays open with supplies at the ready on my dining room table. It is always in sight, so I drop in whenever I have a moment or inkling to work.

What type of calendar do you use?

I work in a desk calendar by Gallery Leather. They are handmade in Maine, have flexible covers in great colors, quality pages and hold up like a champ.

What medium do you like working with best in your journal?

Markers, markers, markers! Also, my new motto is “I need a stamp for that.” I have a good collection of rubber stamps with things like deer, foxes, weather, bicycles, birds, etc.

What do you like best about the No Excuses method?

I like that my journal remembers the details for me. All those small, daily efforts accumulate into something full and magical, which could never be achieved in one go. The process is organic and steady, and once my journal is filled and the cover closed, I can truly feel all that I have done in a year.
