PART 2

The Craft of Poetry

What is a pianist without his piano, or a pilot without her plane? Pencil and paper aside, many of your tools may not be the kind you can hold in your hand or use to cross oceans, but whether you’re a novelist, an ink-bound poet, or a speaker-extraordinaire, things like grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and imagery are devices you’ll need to get where you want to go. Granted, these tools may be fluid in later poetic use, but any practitioner of language should be familiar with them, and constantly working to add new instruments to his or her toolbox. Think of Part 2 as your local hardware store—for poets!
