FRIDAY 12 AUGUST

Woke up and went to the Wi-Fi Wall. Jess had sent me a picture of the hammies. She’s teaching them to play tennis and has made them little rackets out of toothpicks and string! They aren’t doing too well just yet, but it’s the thought that counts.

I also saw Pete there (thankfully in his penguin onesie). Apparently even campsite employees aren’t treated to a proper broadband connection – unbelievable!

He looked a bit sad, so I said, ‘Are you OK, Pete? You seem a bit down.’

He sighed. ‘I’m twenty-seven years old, Lottie, and I’m a mascot in a crappy campsite in the South of France! It’s just not the sort of life I imagined myself living.’

‘It’s better than Wales though, right?’ I said.

He smiled. ‘Yes, it’s better than Wales, but I don’t have anything to show for myself. I live in a tent, I have to stand against a wall to get Wi-Fi, and I don’t even have a girlfriend.’

‘Is there anyone you … like?’

‘Well … I mean … don’t tell anyone this … but I do actually like Sarah.’

‘Who’s Sarah?’

‘Sorry, sorry. I mean, I like Geraldine the Giraffe.’

‘Oh, wow, really? That’s amazing! Why don’t you ask her out?’

‘Well, believe it or not, Lottie, I’m actually a pretty shy guy.’

‘I think you mean you are a pretty shy penguin!’

‘Yes, sorry. I wish I had the confidence to just go for it, you know?’

‘I totally get you, Pete, and don’t worry – maybe I can help. I’ll try and come up with a plan!’

Exciting – now I have a matchmaking mission!
