The trailer was a dark, unsettling place, but it didn’t have to be. Logan lingered in the doorway, ensuring it was the only way out and not quite ready to step inside to get attacked. Slowly, carefully, he reached inside and felt around for a light switch. Luck favoring him for once, his fingers touched a small switch that blazed the trailer to life.
There was nobody here.
Just making sure, Logan shoved the door back as far as it would go. It struck the wall, guaranteeing safety. The noise must have been caused by the wind, but why had Helen left? Why would she flee like that without good reason? It made him suspicious, stirring up a troubled sensation he wished wasn’t there. He knew how unsettling the truth could be.
The interior of the trailer was basically an office. There were two wheely chairs, steel file cabinets bolted to the wall. Computers he barely knew how to work and a security TV. Beside the TV was a shelf full of VHS tapes. Logan shut the door just in case, put away his weapon, then began the long and arduous process of fast-forwarding through the tapes one by one.
All they had to show was the site from multiple angles. He worked his way backward, scrolling through weeks and weeks of construction guys going about their daily business. At night, the yard was still and empty, save the occasional red fox that wandered in.
It seemed to take all night. Logan checked his watch and saw it had only been an hour. Deep down, the fact Amber wasn’t here was killing him. As much as he’d tried not to let it, the hope of finding her alive had been present all night. Now he was only looking for signs of the killer, wondering why exactly he’d led him here. Or if it was even intentional.
The answer came soon enough. Logan hit the Play button and leaned in closer. There was a man on-screen. The image was blurry, and it was dark, but there was definitely a man. He was looking around the site like he was scouting a location. Logan couldn’t tell if it was Max Colby, but he definitely had the same build. It would have surprised him if it wasn’t.
After a few minutes of hard studying, Logan finally saw what was happening. Max was there, but he wasn’t alone. Now that he thought of it, it truly did look as if the killer was searching for something. Logan followed the angles, watching closely with his breath caught in his throat, until he found what he was looking for.
It was the most awful thing he’d ever seen – and that included his daughter’s empty casket. The image on the screen gave away everything, making sense of the unexplainable. The truth was right there in front of him, making him want to vomit. Something twisted in his stomach as he saw the events unfold, and now, finally, everything made perfect sense.
It just wasn’t the truth he wanted. Nothing could have prepared him for this, so there was no way of knowing how to react. All he knew to do was scream at the top of his lungs, letting out his pain and anguish as the reality of the situation presented itself. He yelled and yelled, doing all he could to let it out before he finally exploded and hurt someone.
Before he hurt himself, burying his misery in suicide.
