So much had happened in his absence that Logan didn’t know where to start.

According to Peters, Jenny had been taken to the hospital. She was staying there with Maggie, protected by a police officer until the ordeal was over in one way or the other. Logan thanked Peters for arranging this and headed back there as fast as possible.

It was all lit eyes and gasps as he entered the room. Jenny wheeled toward him and leaned into his waist as he arrived. He held her, laughing and gazing over at Maggie, who gave a short nod of acknowledgment. His very presence here meant he’d succeeded in stopping the killer, and she knew it. Suddenly, this had become a celebration.

Logan kissed her on the cheek and dragged out a chair. He sat beside Maggie, holding her hand while Jenny held the other. It no longer felt like there was a barrier between them. They were one unit – friends through thick and thin. All Logan had to do was allow it.

“I’ve been a—”

“Dick,” Maggie finished, and they all laughed.

“Yes. I’ve not treated you well,” he continued with a stone-dry mouth, then paused to choose his words carefully. “It’s no excuse, but I’ve been dealing with some stuff. You tried to help me – you both did – and I just threw it back in your faces. Now I’d like to make it up to you.”

“Disneyland,” Jenny whispered with a smile.

Logan ignored it. “For the longest time, I’ve been so hung up on remembering Rebecca that I haven’t been able to look forward. On the way over here, I dared to imagine what my future might look like if I simply let it happen. It was a beautiful thing.

“You’re a good person, Maggie. A great person. You deserve somebody who can offer you the world. I can’t compete with that, but if you’ll have me, I’d very much like to offer you something better. Something even better than a charming prince.”

“What’s that?” Maggie asked, sitting up with tears forming in her shining eyes.

“A steak dinner and a movie.”

They laughed. Jenny giggled and turned to wheel herself out. She didn’t want to be involved in any of this, she said, and Logan appreciated the privacy. Maggie waited until she left the room, sniffled, and looked at him with big, watery eyes.

“Medium-rare,” was all she said.
