Ping-Pong with Spirit: The Process of Spirit Communication

In my development circle, I have noticed that people often have difficulty understanding how mediums receive information from the spirit world. Most beginning mediums assume that their spirit communicators will bring a constant stream of information in the way a television set or radio streams information to the passive observer or listener.

On rare occasions when you have a particularly great connection, or a very animated, outgoing spirit communicator, this might indeed be true. Usually, though, the process of receiving spirit information is much more arduous and requires great focus and concentration on the part of the medium.

Indeed, communicating with a spirit person is very much like having a conversation with a person in the physical realm. Both parties take turns speaking, listening, and trying to understand each other. The only difference is that in mediumship, the conversation occurs through the mind of the medium. In other words, we send our thoughts to the spirit people, and they send their responses back to us.

This back-and-forth process is very much like playing a game of ping-pong. However, the point of a game of Spirit Ping-Pong is to make sure that you hit the ball so that your partner can return it to you. In Spirit Ping-Pong you play for win-win. Each party scores a point as the partner receives the ball and then hits it back across the line where the other party can likewise receive it.

Each piece of information that a spirit person relays is a precious. Your spirit communicators would not want you to miss important details. That is why they give only one piece of information at a time. When you’ve received a piece of information, acknowledge it. If you don’t understand something, ask for clarification!

Step 9: Begin a Mental Dialogue with the Spirit People

Before you try this, please make sure you read through the entire instructions. Under each part of the steps, I provide an example in parenthesis to illustrate how the mental dialogue works.

Once you have familiarized yourself with this step, go into your sacred space, open with prayer, and follow steps 1 through 8 of the connecting process. What happens next includes:

  1. 1. A spirit person hits the first ball toward you when he or she provides the first piece of evidence. If you find that no spirit person is reaching out to you, you can initiate the conversation by asking: “Who is here with me?” The first bit of information could be a feeling, a physical sensation, or a thought. If you are clairaudient, you might hear spoken words or songs. If you are clairvoyant, you might see a symbol or an image in your mind’s eye or in your “imagination.” (For example, you might suddenly think of a nice big pepperoni pizza.)
  2. 2. In order for the game to go somewhere, you now have to hit the ball back to your guide and spirit communicator. As medium, you hit the ball back by acknowledging the first bit of information. (You think: “Okay. Pizza!”)
  3. 3. If you receive no further information, your spirit communicator might have missed the ball, so you pick up another one and hit it across the veil by asking for additional information. (Continuing with the example above, you might ask: “Okay, who likes pizza?” Or: “Who is talking about pizza?”)
  4. 4. Your spirit communicator then hits the ball back by providing the next piece of information. (For example, you might feel a sharp pain in your right leg, accompanied by the sensation of having pins stuck in your shoulder.)
  5. 5. You then hit the ball back to your spirit communicator by acknowledging these sensations. (“Okay. Sharp pain in the right leg. Got it. Now, what happened to your shoulder?”)
  6. 6. The spirit person will then answer your question. (Continuing with our example, you then receive the impression of an elderly man in his eighties. You have a sense of a sudden fall, and you get the distinct idea that this is what caused the shoulder injury and that he needed surgery to repair the damage.)
  7. 7. You hit the ball back by summarizing the information you have received so far. (“Pizza, pain in the right leg, elderly man in his eighties fell and broke his shoulder, and he needed surgery to repair the damage.”)

Now, this might seem like a cumbersome process, but with time, as you work with your spirit helpers, they will come to understand how much information you can handle at a time. Eventually it gets to the point where the information comes in more fluently without you having to ask so many questions.

Practice: Give Your Spirit Guides Feedback

It is a good practice to periodically review your meditations, practices, spirit communications, and psychic experiences with your spirit guides. You will find that with occasional feedback to your spirit guides, your ability to receive information from the spirit world will increase.

For example, you can tell them how you have been receiving information from the spirit world, what came in clearly, and what was unclear. Let them know if information comes in too fast and ask them to go a little slower next time. Or ask if they would please speed things up a little if it comes in too slowly. If there is evidence that you consistently miss or bungle, tell your guides to work with you so that you will be accurate.
