LEGO X-WING

In case it wasn’t clear from all the earlier references to Star Wars, I’m a fan. And what could possibly be more popular among kids than Legos and Star Wars combined? Therefore it’s not a total surprise that the largest Lego construction ever built is a 5,335,200-brick X-Wing Starfighter. In fact, it’s a 1:1 scale model of the real thing—that is, if there were a real thing. The construction measures 43 feet (13 metres) long and 11 feet (3.4 metres) tall, with a 44-foot (13-metre) wingspan. The engines even light up and roar just like in the movies. The cockpit, complete with control panel, is large enough for an actual-size Luke Skywalker to fit inside. Alas, he would need more than the Force to get this thing into the air without it falling apart into 5,335,200 pieces. The model was built by the Lego Group to promote the 2013 premiere of LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles. It was showcased in New York City’s Times Square before being relocated (not piloted) to various Legoland resorts.

SO, YOU WANT TO BUILD ONE, TOO?

This Lego model took Erik Varszegi and his team of 31 workers nearly 4 months to complete. Might I recommend the 560-piece Lego X-Wing kit instead?

OTHER CURIOUS LEGO CONSTRUCTIONS

Incidentally, at the time of writing this, not only was the X-Wing model the largest Lego construction ever built, but Lego was also the largest construction toy brand in the world, with total sales of $5.4 billion for the year.
