Introduction

Every three weeks the Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida, welcomes a new series of guests. Many arrive with a variety of health concerns—from tumors to diabetes, from arthritis to digestive difficulties. Others who visit the institute are healthy and determined to maintain that precious gift. In either case, the Hippocrates Health Program helps them cleanse and detoxify their systems and offers them personal control over their health and well-being.

Twenty-five years ago, the institute drew me like a beacon of light guiding me away from my disconnected and unhealthy lifestyle. The Hippocrates Health Institute had an international reputation in pioneering the “take-personal-responsibility” approach to health and life and I wanted to be a part of this growing field. Since then, I have risen through the ranks to my present position as director and have watched tens of thousands of people from around the world learn how to live better, more productive, and healthier lives by using the information we provide at our Lifestyle Change Center, as well as through the many books, videos, and cassette tapes we distribute worldwide.

My work gets more exciting by the day, and now I’m overjoyed to gather the basics of all this information into this book. The opening chapters support the validity of the Hippocrates Health Program by closely examining the evolution of toxic malnutrition in the twentieth century. You’ll follow the emergence of our malnourished society through the fast-paced developments in agricultural technologies, in the proliferation of chemical and pharmaceutical products in the food chain, in consumer expectations, and in government involvement in the food industry. You’ll examine the kinds of food that have sat on our kitchen tables throughout the past century and the technological discoveries and social attitudes that made them popular. You’ll explore technological breakthroughs such as wheat processing that gave us nonspoiling white bread, food additives that increased the shelf-life of baked goods, and pesticides that protected thousands of acres of crops. You’ll also learn how these technologies’ positive intents resulted in a negative effect on our health.

In following chapters, you’ll take an analytical look at the nutritional myths we’ve all been raised on. You’ll examine those “balanced” meals that combine chemically combustible elements and cause an epidemic of gastrointestinal ailments. You’ll uncover the fallacies of popular weight-loss diets and the dangers of good ol’ home cooking.

The Hippocrates Health Program uses the mistakes of the twentieth century to point us in a new direction—a direction that uses what we know about the indisputable healing and restorative powers of living foods to bring physical and mental health to the people of the twenty-first century. I’ve written this book so that you can have a handy, practical, step-by-step guide to living-foods vegetarianism. This is a way of life that restores harmony to the body through the use of fresh, raw, and living foods that nourish, cleanse, and alkalinize the body by the combined action of their nutritional components: vitamins, minerals, amino acids, liquids, complex carbohydrates, fiber, and especially oxygen and enzymes. You’ll learn how to shop for living foods and how to prepare them. You’ll learn how to germinate and sprout your own beans and grains. You’ll learn how to “cook” without the heat that destroys oxygen and enzymes. You’ll also learn how to get the most out of your new diet by making lifestyle changes that include a positive attitude, exercise, colon cleansing, relaxation, fasting, dry skin brushing, aromatherapy, sauna, steam baths, whirlpool, massage, and electrical frequency therapy.

At the end of this book, you’ll find a collection of my family’s favorite recipes. These will give you a solid foundation for creating tasty and visually appealing daily meals to help you attain the goal of the Hippocrates Health Program: To accomplish a mind- and body-cleansing program that is coupled with a totally toxic-free diet. This diet allows your body to use its own inner healing mechanisms without interference from external toxins. This book is your guide to living healthy in a polluted and malnourished world. In summoning the courage of commitment needed to set out in this new direction, you will gain abundant well-being.
