TAP INTO YOUR CREATIVITY

Studies suggest that creative activities spark something called an “upward spiral” of emotion and well-being—in other words, happiness. And you don’t have to be a paid artist or work in a creative field: Anyone who likes to play an instrument, sketch or doodle, or create DIY crafts can benefit from making time for regular creativity. Maybe you like to make inspiration boards on Pinterest, or write corny song lyrics, or design colorful Excel spreadsheets: It all counts! Anything that encourages you to think outside of the box, come up with original ideas, make connections between concepts, and problem-solve is a creative activity. The result? Less anxiety, more resilience, and a stronger sense of playfulness—all of which factor into your overall happiness.

One thing to keep in mind: This is about being creative, not building a masterpiece. Remember to have fun as you create, and don’t get caught up in whether the result is perfect. Besides, it’s practice that will get you to that masterpiece (if that is the goal).

SWAP CLOTHES WITH A FRIEND

Image

You sift through your closet and think about how you have “nothing” to wear. Instead of heading out the door to buy something new, or filling up your online cart, try setting up a clothes swap with friends. Have everyone bring the clothes they never wear anymore, or that no longer fit, and have some fun trading them. Your gently used clothes will get a second life, and you’ll walk away a happier (and more stylish) version of yourself. You’ll also save money, which always feels good, and make a more sustainable choice for the planet.

CANCEL PLANS

Despite how much you may love getting together with friends or visiting a close family member, sometimes you want nothing more than to cancel all your plans in favor of chilling alone on the couch or going to bed early. And that’s okay! It’s actually better for your happiness to bail on plans once in a while, instead of forcing yourself to do something you don’t feel up for. Be honest about what you need, offer to reschedule, and then cut yourself some slack.

BUILD A SOUNDING BOARD

Image

When you’re trying to solve a problem, you might be too close to the issue to see it clearly. And that’s where having a sounding board of trusted family members and/or friends can be super helpful. Ask for their insights into a situation, or ask them to just hear you out as you vent about what’s bothering you. You’ll feel supported, and you’ll likely end up with more clarity too.

TRY AN ABHYANGA MASSAGE

Image

This self-massage comes from Ayurveda, an ancient healing system from India. With Abhyanga, you use a warm, herb-infused oil to massage your body from head to toe, in a wonderful act of love and appreciation for yourself. (It can also help calm nerves, aid in detoxing and circulation, and more!)

MAKE AN INDULGENT HOT CHOCOLATE

When you’re feeling a little down in the dumps, a warm cup of delicious hot chocolate can be just the thing to lift your mood (and bring you back to fond childhood memories). Get a little fancy by topping it with whipped cream and shaved chocolate.

THINK A HAPPY THOUGHT

Image

It might sound too simple, but thinking positive thoughts really does make you feel happier. When you’re feeling down in the dumps, or notice any negative thoughts creeping in, think something positive: “The weather is so nice today” or “I am a great listener.” Repeat the thought in your head (or out loud!) and feel the good vibes take over.

JOURNAL ABOUT YOUR DAY

Jotting down your daily observations—the small things that made you happy, creative ideas, little moments of joy—helps build your self-esteem and reminds you to relish each day. Journaling also teaches you to be mindful: You can work through any current anxieties or frustrations and process how you’re feeling, so you can let go of the things that get between you and happiness.

PRACTICE BODY NEUTRALITY

Image

Body neutrality is when you accept your body for what it looks and feels like now. You aren’t forcing yourself to love or even like what you see in the mirror, and you’re not disliking it, either (a feeling that affects the happiness of a lot of people). To practice this, look at yourself in the mirror and say an affirmation like, “I am okay with how my body looks and feels today.”
