BELIEVE IN ABUNDANCE

Image

When you think about happiness, you might automatically focus on what you don’t have: more money, a better car, perfect skin. Or you’re on the lookout for what could happen to make you unhappy in the future: The person you just matched with on that dating app might eventually ghost you, or you may lose your debit card. It’s a default reaction of scarcity that can become a habit, keeping you from feeling truly happy.

Fortunately, with a little intent, you can reroute this mindset! Every time your thoughts start to go toward a negative conclusion, pause. Take note of where your mind is headed (without judgment) and then make the choice to believe in what is good in your life—and what is going to be good in the future. You can come up with a phrase to recite to yourself to help solidify the decision, like, “I believe in the abundance that surrounds me.” You can also picture all of the things there are to be grateful for and count them off in your head. By putting faith in what you have, you’ll invite even more joy into your world.

CHECK OUT A FARMERS’ MARKET

Image

Supporting a farmers’ market in your community can help you feel more connected to the foods you eat, and help you make sustainable choices that keep your body happy too. Knowing where and who your food comes from is a good feeling, and seeing some of the work that goes into it gives you more appreciation for that food.

MAKE NOISE

Image

Ever notice how little kids love to whoop and stomp around? They aren’t afraid to make plenty of noise, and they’re onto something: It’s so freeing and energizing to let yourself get a little loud! So make some noise. Live authentically and forget about your “inside voice” once in a while (when others are out of earshot, of course).

HIGH-FIVE SOMEONE

Image

High fives go hand in hand (literally!) with positive moments, like celebrating a win, saying hello, acknowledging someone’s hard work, or giving a little encouragement to a friend. And if you’re alone, there’s no shame in giving yourself a high five to commemorate an achievement—or just celebrate yourself. It’s an instant mood-booster!

RUN A MILE

Image

Studies prove that running can do wonders for both your physical health and mental state. Along with building stronger bones and a vigorous heart, it also helps to clear your mind and lower stress levels, leading to more happiness overall. So hit the treadmill or head outdoors for a short mile run.

START YOUR MORNING RIGHT

Image

The way you start each day has a huge effect on your mood going forward. Think about the difference between a morning where you hit snooze five times, forget to pack a lunch, and throw on a wrinkled shirt—versus one where you wake up early, drink a glass of water, and have the time for a short activity like journaling mindfully. How you tailor your own morning routine is entirely up to you, but picking things that serve your body, mind, and spirit are crucial to cultivating happiness.

PICK THREE THINGS TO ACCOMPLISH

Image

Most people don’t finish everything on their to-do list every day—usually because there are so many things on it! Instead of feeling overwhelmed or like you aren’t putting a dent in your to-dos, limit your daily list to three core objectives: the stuff you absolutely, 100 percent want (or need) to accomplish that day. You’ll feel more capable of tackling what you need to do, and even happier when you see the results of focusing on what’s most important to you.

BUY NEW SOCKS AND UNDERWEAR

Image

Undergarments don’t last forever! In fact, you should really replace them every six months to a year—especially if you notice something doesn’t fit like it used to, or is stretched, faded, or worn out. Invest a little time and money into updating the basics; you’ll feel refreshed and put-together. It may even inspire you to take another look at the rest of your wardrobe and what items might not be helping you feel confident and happy.

WATCH A MUSICAL

Image

Live theater—the real deal on Broadway or a recorded performance—offers something unique to the usual movie. You’re able to enter another world, leave behind any worries, and deep-dive into a new perspective or setting. Add catchy show tunes and powerful monologues, and you can’t help but feel uplifted.

APPLY A FACE MASK

Image

The beauty of a face mask is that you can’t really multitask or speed through it. It’s a chance to slow down, pamper yourself, and relax as your skin absorbs the nutrients. You can choose an inexpensive drugstore mask, a more luxe option, or even make your own at home. Your face will feel hydrated, and you’ll be happy you took a little time to treat yourself.

MAKE YOUR BEDDING EXTRA COMFY

Image

Considering you spend a third of your life sleeping, it’s worth making your bed as comfortable as possible. Buy the softest sheets you can find, and have a flannel or fleece set on hand for the colder months. Add a mattress topper with a padded mattress cover for more plushness, plus a down comforter or cozy quilt. (Seriously, this is your excuse to be as extra as you want.) Sleep happy!

ESTABLISH A STRESS-RELIEF PLAN

Image

The second you start to feel stressed or anxious, what do you do? Maybe freak out a little? Or completely shut down? Not anymore: It’s time to make a plan! Think about activities that help turn your mood around immediately, like spraying lavender mist on your hands, counting to ten, or pulling up that funny Instagram account that always makes you laugh. Create a list of these quick fixes and stock up on any supplies you need so you are always ready to kick stress to the curb.

RE-EVALUATE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

Image

A huge part of happiness is nourishing the relationships that lift you up—and letting go of the ones that bring you down. Take a look at the different relationships in your life and reflect on how each one makes you feel. Are there any you might need to reconsider?
