Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult, or help wouldn’t be available if things go wrong. For instance, a person suffering from agoraphobia may be scared of leaving home, travelling on public transport or visiting a crowded public place. If people with agoraphobia find themselves in a stressful situation they usually experience symptoms of a panic attack, such as rapid breathing, feeling hot and sweaty, and feeling sick.

Like Anni’s mum, they avoid situations that cause anxiety and may only leave the house with a friend or relative, or order groceries online rather than go to the supermarket.

There are lots of treatments available to help people who suffer from agoraphobia. If you – or someone you care about – are affected by this condition, get in touch with your doctor first.
