Write about things that really happened to you; it’s one of the best ways to get started as a poet. Does your mother have rules? Of course she does. Do those rules drive you crazy? Of course they do. Write about your mother’s rules and why you think they’re good or bad and why they drive you crazy.
Does your mother have little quirks? Of course she does. One of my mother’s quirks was saving inedible food until it was old enough to throw out. That’s kind of nutty when you think about it, but lots of people do it, and my mother was one of them. Maybe your mother does it too. Or maybe she has another quirk, like never throwing out a piece of string, no matter how small and useless, or arranging all the food in the pantry in alphabetical order, or washing a bar of soap after she uses it.
You can write about any of these things. Once you start thinking about them, you’ll find it hard to stop. If you don’t want people to know that you’re writing about your mother, then change her name, or pretend it’s someone else’s mother, or change her into an animal—even a bug. It’s completely up to you.
