Filmed by students, edited and narrated by Abby Martin of The Empire Files, and produced by Project Censored, “United States of Distraction: Fighting the Fake News Invasion” chronicles critical media literacy with faculty experts, students, and media makers who provide contextual analysis for understanding the current rise of “fake news.” In addition to deconstructing this phenomenon, the film reminds us that fake news is nothing new, but rather an age-old form of propaganda. The film’s interviewees offer solutions to forestall the pernicious influence of fake news on America’s democratic institutions.

Selected as an entry for the 2020 Sonoma International Film Festival, the documentary provides a comprehensive account of the current media landscape, making it a valuable teaching tool. To arrange a screening with discussion by the filmmakers, contact mickey@projectcensored.org.
