My wife says she could drink this sauce. But I wouldn’t recommend it. Everything in moderation! Try it with pork or chicken.
2 cups ketchup
1 cup water
1 onion, finely diced
½ cup molasses
5 tablespoons sugar
5 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
Juice of 1 lemon
2 teaspoons liquid smoke
1½ teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced
-
In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat on the stovetop, add ketchup, water, onion, molasses, sugar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, lemon juice, liquid smoke, black pepper, and garlic.
-
Bring the sauce to a boil then reduce the heat to low.
-
Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-
Remove the saucepan from the heat and strain out any big chunks, or puree the sauce.
-
Serve the sauce hot or cold, and store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator, or pour the sauce into jars for canning or longer storage.
