Tell everyone how you’re feeling with this clever door sign that allows you to change the message.

What You Need

• Pattern for Welcome to My Room
• Cotton fabric as big as a sheet of paper
• 1 felt square
• 12-inch length of ribbon or rickrack
• Chalk
• Scissors
• Straight pins
• One piece of paper, 8¹⁄₂ × 11 inches
• Markers for the sign
• Sewing machine and thread

A Note For Grown-Ups

This door sign is so handy that you might be requesting one of your own! The pattern is a little tricky, so help might be needed in making sure the window is cut out in the cotton fabric and not in the felt fabric. The felt backing helps make the sign hang straight. Remind your young sewer not to sew too far across the opening when sewing on the ribbon handle.

1. 1. Find the Welcome to My Room pattern in the back of the book. Cut out the pattern and the window drawn on the pattern. Use chalk to trace the pattern onto cotton fabric one time. Trace the opening for the window onto the cotton fabric, too.
   
2. 2. Cut out the fabric. To cut the window opening, fold the fabric in half and cut a slit. Now you can easily get your scissors into the window to cut along the markings. You will have a piece of cotton fabric with a window inside of it.
   
3. 3. Next, trace the Welcome to My Room pattern onto the felt fabric one time. This time, do not trace the window.
   

   Don’t trace the window this time!

4. 4. Cut out the felt piece around the outer edges. It should be a solid rectangle.
   
5. 5. Put the cotton fabric on top of the felt fabric with both good sides facing up.
   
6. 6. Starting at the top right corner, machine-stitch around the three sides. Leave the top open. Do not sew around the window.
   
7. 7. On the back, pin each end of the ribbon onto the top edges of the sign right at the seams.
   
8. 8. At the sewing machine, make a reinforce stitch on each end of the ribbon.
   
9. 9. Fold the paper in half and slide it into the sign.
   

   What will your sign say? You can change it whenever you need to!

10. 10. Write your message using markers or crayons in the window.
