Chapter 16

Back in the safety of their cell, Angel and Luann prepared for their nighttime ritual. “I’m worried about Steger. She’s already taken an interest in you. If Hollister encourages her—”

“I’ll run,” Luann cut her off.

“Fast as you can. Find me. Find Nana. Find anyone in the family. If you can’t find us, Merriman is one of the few guards you can trust. To be honest, she’d love an excuse to stick it to Hollister and Steger. If you see Littleton first, keep running.”

“No kidding,” Luann whispered as she shed her clothing. “There’s something wrong with that one. Crawly I get, he’s a pervert.”

“I don’t get why Littleton needs to follow us around, either. Can’t trust any of the guards, just head for a member of the family. Preferably me or Nana.”

“Nana?”

“Let’s just say Hollister respects her,” Angel stammered slightly, unable to tear her gaze away from Luann’s naked body.

“You never answered the question I asked you the other day. How would you get out of here?”

“I don’t think I ever will.”

In public, Angel played by the rules, stroking and grabbing parts of Luann’s anatomy. Luann played along, never once questioning her actions.

The nightly performances were hard on both. Angel would wildly ride against Luann’s delicious backside while Luann sang—or rather screamed—her praises.

It was becoming increasingly difficult for Angel to keep her passion in check and not just take the girl. Luann did nothing to discourage her. One look in those childlike eyes was all it took for Angel to rein in her lustful desires.

This night would be no different. Luann stretched out on her bunk, clad in nothing but her panties. She gave Angel a wistful smile. Angel felt her clit clench with excitement. Silently, she reminded herself that by morning she would once again find herself exhausted and frustrated.

Already on fire, she shed her clothing. She took a moment to drink in the beautiful woman sprawled out before her. It did nothing to ebb her growing desire. Still, she couldn’t resist taking in the sight before the lights went out.

Each morning, she questioned her sanity. Angel constantly lied to herself that soon they would be able to end the charade.

For the moment, there was the momentary feeling of pure bliss when their bodies touched. It was the best moment of her day. It was followed by the worst moment. That time when she needed to remind herself that this was all she was allowed.

She awoke the following morning to find that Luann had already showered and dressed. With each passing day, Luann looked more and more troubled. Angel wished she could help. Getting Luann to talk about things was difficult. Most of the time, she would need to wait until Luann said something.

“Do you think they feel bad?” Luann asked as she brushed out her long red hair.

“Who?”

“Mom and Nana. Do you think they feel bad about what they’ve done?”

“Probably,” Angel said. “They’ve said that they do. Nana had fallen for the proverbial bad boy. Or bad boys. Hard to tell sometimes. By the time she was sent to prison, she’d spent most of her adult life in a drug-fueled haze. Mom was about to start working on her master’s degree in comparative literature. She tried to explain it to me once, how her world ended up being all about blow. Something about it was the eighties and how everyone lived for excess. I don’t get it. Why are you asking?”

“He hurt me.” Luann trembled. “But I still feel bad. I didn’t want him to die. I just wanted him to leave me alone.”

“It’s not your fault.”

“I pushed him.”

“I don’t care what the courts decided. You were defending yourself.”

“It’s always there. I close my eyes, and I still see him.”

“I wish I could make it go away,” Angel tenderly offered.

Luann released a heavy sigh as she snuggled against Angel.

“You like fixing things.”

Angel struggled to hear her. It took a moment to decipher the mumbled words. “I do,” she confessed.
