Emily
Watching Miguel walk away about ripped my heart out, how will I survive three days without him being around? In the past two years he has been around all the time, then in the past two and half weeks we have spent every minute of the day together. With the last few days, we even slept within reaching distance of each other. Knowing full well that I shouldn’t start depending on him to be around all the time doesn’t slow me down on falling hard and fast for him. He has such a bad track record with women, but I believe him when he says he’s loved me for over a decade, something in his eyes tells me he is being honest.
Driving back to the beach house I try to come up with the best plan of action that I can take from here to send a stern message home. Walking through the front door of the beach house I can smell Miguel in the air still, but the house feels so empty without his booming voice and his large frame not taking up half of the breakfast bar. Climbing up on a barstool with my cell and laptop I get ready to start showing everyone I’m no ones to control anymore. With shaky fingers, I type in the number for my home and wait for Ora to answer the phone which she promptly does on the third ring.
“Hi Ora. How is everything in the house? Are you doing okay? How bad is the gossip so far? Has anyone come to the house bothering you?”
I go a hundred miles an hour when she picks up the phone and says hello sweet girl. If they are bothering Ora I will unleash the worst part of my life upon them with a smile on my face. Jake Shaw needs to remember I have connections in a world he will never be allowed into.
“Oh, my sweet girl it’s so good to hear your voice. Things have been a little tense for the past week and a half, but no there hasn’t been anyone in the house. Ginger has called every day for a week now, she’s a little upset, but I’ve not told her anything, but I get a feeling she may have seen a few tabloid pictures. Now that’s enough about the drama in this city tell me how you are doing? The pictures I’ve seen floating around show you with your sweet smile back where it belongs. Told you to trust him, that man has never wanted anything but the absolute best for you.”
“Ora, you really are a dear to put up with me. I’m feeling better about everything and I followed your suggestion and let Blake go a few days ago. I emptied his ashes into the ocean when we were coming back in from a coral reef trip. Seemed fitting to let him go in the wind he was never meant to be tamed you know?”
“Sweetie he loved you, he truly did, he was just bad at showing it. He loved you from the first time he saw you, never think he wasn’t in love with you. Now you know the secret that was hidden for way too long. What do you plan to do with my boy and knowledge you have?”
“That’s one of the reasons I’m calling you. What do you think of the idea of selling the apartment and me buying a house? I’d want you to come with me because I can’t imagine not having you around to take care of me. As for Miguel do you really want to know what I’m doing or going to do?”
“No, I don’t want any of the details or anything, but how did you take the secret he had to tell?”
“It was a bit of a shock that’s for sure, but then I started looking back over the years and there were signs everywhere, don’t have a clue how I missed it. You don’t have to warn me not to hurt him, but you might want to warn him because I’m falling fast and hard here. All right, enough about my love life. I’m going to contact a realtor friend and have her come by, do some pictures and list the apartment. Also going to have her start looking for houses and maybe a few apartments for us to look at when I come home. Before you ask I’ll be home after the first of the year.”
“Emily, you need to rest, relax and have fun, don’t be stressing about stuff. Enjoy what is left of your vacation I’ll be here when you get home, no plans to go anywhere without you.”
With a plan in place for the apartment, I tell Ora goodbye and hang up the phone.
Oh, this next phone call isn’t going to be pretty at all it seems. Can’t believe they invaded my privacy and then turned the pictures lose for the tabloids to play with. Sliding off the barstool I walk around the bar and get a bottle of white wine out and pour myself a glass, anything to prolong the phone call. Stretching my back muscles out before I climb back up on the stool and pick my cell phone up with dread in my veins. Listening to the phone ring through to voicemail has me taking a calming breath. I leave a quick message for Ginger to give me a call back when she has time. Dropping my cell on the bar top, I’m off the stool and strolling through the patio doors overlooking the ocean, as the sun sends out its final rays of the day. Taking deep breaths of the salty air, I try to calm my racing pulse rate. Knowing the apartment will be on the market before Thanksgiving Day is a little victory for myself, but I still have to deal with my best friend, plus I really need to call Toni before any more stuff is leaked to the media.
