CHAPTER 40

Emily

Seeing Cat for the first time in months makes me realize how much time has passed me by. She’s no longer the little girl who seemed to always get Blake and myself into trouble at the family home, she’s now a very pretty young lady. One I’d bet money on will be as wild as they come once she goes off to college in a couple of years. With the Shaw beauty and money, she’ll be hell to deal with, it’s a certainty. Watching her bounce her way around the room is amusing to watch. Then just like that a figure hidden in the shadows of the room catches my eye, it’s Miguel without a doubt. When Catherine turns and heads straight for him I see red for a moment when she hugs him. Something is so wrong with me, I’ve watched that man bring one woman after another through his front door and it never bothered me in the least. Watching him hug Cat though makes me want to mark him as mine and mine alone. Jealousy was never an issue before because no matter what I knew where I stood at the end of the day because we were married. Now for the first time I’ve got to deal with an emotion I should have learned to deal with when I was a teen, but instead I was already married.

Reaching for Ginger’s hand as she is flirting with the young man she’s talking to, I lightly pull her to gain her attention.

“Gee, I’ve got to go this wasn’t a good idea. I’ll send the car back after I get home.”

Skirting the edge of the room trying to make my escape unnoticed

“Emily, listen to yourself don’t let these people get in your head, there’s not been any problems. Which makes me want to know what you’re running from?”

“Ginger, I don’t know how to deal with all the issues involved with Miguel. There wasn’t a course on jealousy or anything in school. I dated one person and I married him that’s the sum of my personal life as you know. Seeing him and watching other women touch him makes me want to hurt someone, that’s not me.”

“No that makes you human, everyone has those feelings from time to time. How do you think he feels and has felt for the past ten years? You need to quit avoiding him it’ll make your life less stressful.”

“That all makes perfect sense to my brain, but my heart and body want to leave. Well, maybe not my heart really. Walk with me for a bit Gee I need to get my bid written then your free to wonder till you find what you’re looking for.”

Making our way over to the auction table I keep glancing around waiting for something or someone to sneak up on me from the shadows. Once I have my bid in place and Ginger is done playing with all the items on the table she gives me a reassuring hug.

“Em, for once in your life just enjoy yourself and don’t worry about what anyone thinks about you. Just go be the girl I’ve known all my life the one who never stood by and let anyone get away with anything.”

Understanding exactly what Ginger means doesn’t propel me into the mash of the event. Slowly working my way towards the hall that leads to the exit I slip back into the shadows where the floor is still in view, yet I can stay undetected. Leaning my back against the smooth wall, I jump when I encounter the light brush of finger tips as they crest the small of my back. I spin around ready to smack someone when my breath rushes out of me on the exhale of Miguel’s name.

“You just about scared me to death! Why on earth are you lurking around in the shadows?”

“Dear Emily that question could be asked of you also, but I’d rather not discuss who you’re hiding from. There are a lot of things I’d like to ask. but that’s not one of them right now.”

“Miguel, you deserve so many answers from myself this just isn’t the place for that conversation. Everyone in this place is waiting to see if we do something together be it talk, dance hell half of them are waiting to see if we leave together.”

When Miguel slowly slips his hand in mine I feel the electrical current shot straight to my center. This man in a matter of weeks has me feeling things I’ve never felt before. The slightest touch from him has me wanting to rip clothes off.

Once our hands are intertwined I slightly tug her hand to get her to follow me further out of the ballroom. Once we enter the foyer I turn down a lightly lit corridor, silently walking us half way down and stop. Trapping her between myself and the wall I lean in and lightly brush her lips with mine then pull back. When she reaches for me I take a step back.

“Emily no matter what my body wants there has to be a conversation between us on what’s going to happen.”

“Miguel, for the night can’t we just pretend we are back in the Bahamas?”

“This is breaking my own heart as I say this Darlin’ but I can’t be your fuck buddy. You deserve more, and I also deserve more now. We both know something is here both of us feel it, but Darlin’ you’ve got to be willing to jump with me, until then I can’t be just your bed buddy.”

Looking into his baby blue eyes I could see the hurt, but also the hunger just lying under the surface. Nothing in life had ever prepared me for what this man did to my body, my mind, or my heart. I had no clue how I didn’t see this coming, but now I’m sincerely glad it has happened. Cupping his jaw and lightly brushing my fingers through that sexy five o’clock shadow he always has.

“Darlin’ go on back into the party I’ll be there in just a bit, need a moment to get myself under control here. Make sure you save a dance or two for me.”

Agreeing to go back in was the best idea for now. Stepping up on my tip toes I lightly brush my lips against his ear and whisper “I’ll save every dance for you.”
