APPENDIX 2

A PERUVIAN HERBAL

Here, we offer selections of frequently used herbs and plantas maestras from Peru, along with their direct Western counterparts or, where necessary, Western analogues for plants that are more easily found. We also list the medicinal uses for these plants as well as their magical properties, so you can continue to explore them on your own.

The first herb listed in column five (in capitals) is the direct counterpart (where there is one) of the Peruvian plant (in column one). Those that are not direct equivalents, but that have similar effects, are listed below it in normal script.

Medical complaints that these herbs address are listed in column three. Analogues and alternatives used in such treatments are given in column five. Specific magical uses and the herbs for these appear in columns four and six.

Again, since the same plants often work for many different conditions, to avoid repetition, not all medical or magical uses are listed for every herb in every case. If you don’t see your condition or need against a particular herb, try scanning the other columns and you will almost certainly find it there.
