GLOSSARY

ARTILLERY—large guns that are usually moved on wheels and require more than one person to load and fire

BAYONET—metal blade attached to the end of a musket

BOYCOTT—refuse to buy, as a protest against an unpopular act or policy

CAMPAIGN—series of battles fought in one region

CASUALTIES—soldiers killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner during a battle

CAVALRY—soldiers who fight on horseback

GUERRILLLAS—fighters who carry out small attacks and then blend in with the local population

INTOLERABLE—so harsh or bad that it cannot be accepted

MILITIA—groups of citizens who have been organized to fight as a group but who are not professional soldiers

REDOUBT—a small fort built quickly, often made out of dirt and rocks

SIEGE—a military effort to surround a location and prevent the people there from receiving food or supplies

TRAITOR—someone who works against the interests of his or her country
