Ole’s Time Line

            1877 Ole Evinrude is born in Norway on April 19.
1882 The Evinrude family comes to America.
1892 Ole builds his first boat and sails it on Lake Ripley.
1892–1899 Ole works at various shops in Madison, Pittsburgh, and Chicago.
1900 Ole moves to Milwaukee and works for the E. P. Allis Company.
1900–1908 Ole forms a series of partnerships—including Clemick and Evinrude and the Motor Car Power Equipment Company—all of which fall apart quickly.
1906 Ole gets his idea for an outboard motor while on a picnic.
    Ole and Bess are married on November 21.
    Cameron Waterman invents the first-known successful outboard motor.
1907 Ralph Evinrude is born on September 27.
1909 Ole builds and sells his first outboard motors. Bess writes the famous “Don’t Row!” slogan.
1911 Ole forms the Evinrude Detachable Row Boat Motor Company with Chris Meyer.
1914 Ole sells his half of the company to Chris Meyer.
1920 Ole and Bess form the Elto Outboard Motor Company.
1929 Evinrude, Elto, and Lockwood Motor Company merge to form Outboard Motors Corporation (OMC), with Ole as president of the new company.
1933 Bess Evinrude dies.
1934 Ole Evinrude dies.
    Ralph Evinrude takes over as president of OMC.
1982 Ralph retires from OMC.
2001 Bombardier Recreational Products buys the Evinrude motor line.
