Appendix III

Equipment

We are indebted to many people and firms for advice and contributions, which allied to our considerable experience, meant we had no practical problems on the journey.

Tents: Three individual Vango Micro 2 tents and larger domed Discovery for multiple use.

Stoves: Reliable, common to Morocco for cartridges (cartouches) we simply used Camping Gaz stoves for minor needs, most cooking being done on large Gaz cylinders which also provided good lighting.

Clothing: Brasher shirts, trousers, jackets and lightweight fleece jacket were excellent. We also had heavier Berghaus fleeces.

Waterproofs: (Sometimes as important for windproofing.) Berghaus Gore-tex Lightning jackets and lightweight Brasher overtrousers.

Footwear: Brasher boots (which Charles used all the way and highly praised), Reebok sandals, suitable for rough walking which I used for much of the trekking. Duofold socks kept feet comfy.

Rucksacks: Berghaus Cyclops IIAztec: (which rode on the mules; we rarely backpacked) and Berghaus Dart 30 day sacks.

Sleeping bags:We used our own, swapping to lightweight versions after leaving Imlil. (I went from Black’s Icelandic to Snugpak Merlin.)

Other items: Brolly (for sun rather than rain); Scottish Mountain Gear provided Arthur’s Seats which made for comfortable sitting; Therm-a-rests were used for sleeping on—and even carried on the final lightweight traverse; we all had Petzel headtorches and Opinel pocket knives. Other essential items included route book, maps, first aid kit, compass, whistle, suncream, sunglasses and emergency food.

First Aid: Small kits were always carried in a day bag but the mules also carried a comprehensive First Aid box. This included: items for upset stomachs, bites, sprains, antiseptics, dressings, Potable Agua, antibiotics, Rennies, assorted bandages, pain killers, sterile sutures, needles and syringes.

Food: This was more of a problem for the mules than for us. Plenty of fresh food could be carried and supplies were regularly renewed at souks. We had tins of meat, dried fruits, muesli and instant custard and those who joined us temporarily brought items such as Christmas pudding, rich cake, cheese and oatcakes.
