* Lyrical attribution in Throbbing Gristle’s work is thorny. Tutti recalls, “The lyrics were, more often than not, a group effort regarding topics, particularly some ‘wording’ and ‘phrases,’” though she grants that P-Orridge ad-libbed a fair bit both in concert and on record.53 The most famous example of this process is the song “Discipline,” whose titular theme was suggested by Christopherson shortly before its improvised live debut at SO36 in Berlin over a beat of Carter’s. In contrast to this account—and perhaps in tension with the live version of “Still Walking” discussed earlier—P-Orridge today claims “Throbbing Gristle did NOT write any lyrics. I wrote the lyrics to every single TG song. Once in a while I would ask, what shall I sing about.”54 P-Orridge also adds, “One or two times Cosey would edit down lyrics I’d written. She did this on ‘Almost A Kiss’.”55 Tutti responds to P-Orridge’s claimed authorship of the band’s lyrics, declaring it “counter to the known and recorded history.”56 Disagreements over Throbbing Gristle’s lyrics—specifically their ideological function in the music—contributed to the foursome’s second dissolution in late 2010.
