FEATURES TO LOOK FOR IN A TOASTER OVEN

Basic functions: Grill, broil, toast, and convection bake. Convection baking is essentially baking that relies upon a fan for even heat distribution. It may result in more even cooking, and it may also hasten cooking times.

Removable crumb tray: Nearly all toaster ovens today are made with a removable crumb tray to make cleaning easier. No more turning the toaster upside down and shaking it onto the counter.

Timer: Wouldn’t it be great to have a toaster oven that turned itself off after 15 minutes (or whenever)? Some do, and some don’t. Be sure to check.

Nonstick interior: This is another feature almost always found in better toaster ovens that saves a lot of scrubbing. If you follow my suggestions about a good once-a-week cleaning, your toaster oven should last a good long time.

Cool-touch exterior: Ensures that you won’t burn yourself on the oven while it’s on by keeping the exterior of the oven relatively cool. This is an especially good feature if you have kids in the house, although I don’t recommend turning your kids loose on the toaster oven unattended, whether it has a cool-touch exterior or not.

Good warranty: Most toaster ovens offer a one- to three-year warranty. The longer, the better. Be sure to check.

Customer service and tech support: This could be important. Although chances are you will never have to use it, wouldn’t it be nice to know you could pick up the phone and get your questions answered quickly, courteously, and accurately? Some companies have very poor customer support, while others are just terrific. Make sure a customer service number is included with your toaster oven.
