Prologue

“Seriously guys? A séance?” I can’t help the nervous giggle trying to escape. My wonderful friends had decided during our spring break that they wanted to talk to Trinity’s great-great-grandma. Trinity Silvers is my best friend, and one of the most powerful witches I have ever met. It is because of her that I found my calling as a witch in charge of the element of Air. So now Trinity, our three other friends and I are sitting in Trin’s backyard around a bonfire. Trin’s brown hair, blows in the wind I have magically kicked up, and her blue eyes are almost glowing with the amount of her power. I’m tempted to move my black locks from my face, but I hold still.

“Is it normal for the circle to be this intense for a simple séance?” Salem Luck, our red headed, green-eyed, water wielder asks from her position. I frown. I had thought the wind magic was just my doing, but apparently it’s not.

“Are you sure we did it right?” Sophie King, our fire witch asks. Considering this was mostly her idea, it unnerves me that she’s worried. Her blonde hair is whipping around her face, and she keeps moving it with her hands as if that makes a difference. I look at the small fire we have in the middle of us. The flames have changed to a blueish-green color. Last time we did a séance, we did it with an Ouija board. This time we were hoping to get an actual, physical being to visit.

“Maybe we should stop.” Dominic Thompson, our only male witch, and earth magic user, states. I’m inclined to agree with him on this one. He adjusts his glasses, his brown hair looking shaggy in the wind. However, just as Trinity starts to close down the circle, the fire explodes, sending us all onto our asses. I can see black figures escaping through the flames. One could believe they were merely shadows, but we can tell the difference. Some of the figures have red eyes... demons.

“Shit!” Trinity yells, trying to capture some of the creatures with her magic. We all do our part to catch them. “Call back your element! Close the damned circle!” I immediately call my air magic back, closing off the East. The others follow suit, and the fire goes out. Trinity is holding onto some of the figures, her eyes glowing as she mumbles in Latin, sending them back to wherever they came from.

“How many do you think got out?” I ask, not seeing any dark shadows around. I look to my boyfriend, Sebastian. His black hair is disheveled and his blue eyes have a startled look about them. “You alright?” I whisper to him. Normally I would read his mind, but I hate invading his privacy like that. He grabs my waist and pulls me closer.

“That was intense.” He grumbles. I hug him close, still searching the night for dark figures. I hug him tight, using his strength to calm me. Even if he’s scared out of his mind, I know that he’ll protect me. He’s my rock, my best friend, the love of my life.

“I would guess at least three got out.” Trinity voices, coming to stand with us. “They’re long gone by now I would think.” She sighs. That leaves me with an uneasy feeling. I jump when Sophie starts screaming. We all look at her. Her hands are gripping her hair, and her eyes keep switching from green to red. I’d never seen anyone possessed before, but I’m pretty sure that is exactly what is happening.

“GET HER OUT!” Sophie screams, and we all rush to her. The four of us link arms creating a circle around our friend, Trinity standing in for the element Sophie usually contributes.

“Exit oh dæmonio liberarem. Hoc corpore exit. Recedemus!” Trinity screams in Latin. Sophie screams again, her body jerking. She stops suddenly, turning and looking directly at me. It makes my skin crawl. The girl looking at me is not my best friend.

“You will be the first to suffer, Kitty Cat.” That is also not Sophie’s voice. The voice is darker, and has a screech to it. As if Sophie had sucked in helium and swallowed glass at the same time.

“Exit oh dæmonio liberarem. Hoc corpore exit. recedemus!” We all yell at once, and Sophie’s body convulses again before the dark shadow separates from her body. She crumples to the ground, eyes closed. Dominic and I move to her as Trinity and Salem use their magic to try to catch the demon that escaped.

“She’s unconscious.” Dominic states after feeling for a pulse. He and Sebastian lift her, carrying her toward Trinity’s parent’s house. I bring up the rear with Trinity.

“What the hell was that about?” I whisper as we walk into the cool house. Goosebumps still covering my arms. So much for talking to ancestors. All we wanted was to learn about the past from someone that lived then. Damn History class...we should have just used Google.

“I don’t know. I’ll ask my aunt about it. Probably just a pissed off demon. We’ll see how it goes. I wouldn’t worry.” Trin winks at me. I nod, following her inside. I can’t shake the feeling that this is far from over, and that I’m about to be screwed over royally. Before I head in, I search the area again, my eyes squinting in the dark, trying to make out any shadows that shouldn’t be there.

My name is Kitty Suzanne Rodrigues... and this is where my story begins.
