Hi, I'm the author of this book, and I hope you liked it. As a former journalist, I wanted a reporter protagonist who could solve problems. Mac came into being, based on my reporting experiences as well as others, coupled with the military experiences of a former student turned journalist. This is the sixth book in the series — you can find the earlier books at your favorite e-book retailer.

So, in true thriller fashion, this is over the top — as Mac Davis thrillers are. But Mac has changed over the course of the last few books. He has people to care for. People who matter to him. And they are in danger.

That’s not something Mac is used to.

So how true to life is this book? There are those who would say not at all true. Cops wouldn’t get away with something like this! Unfortunately, cops have gotten away with things just like this. The statistics quoted in this book are accurate, and the situations in this book are based on real life experiences. An eye-opening read is We Own This City — a True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by Justin Fenton, a Baltimore cop reporter. It was particularly useful because of that intersection between cops and reporters. But the corruption in Baltimore was an open secret for a decade before some of the worst offenders finally stood trial — in part because no one wanted to believe it could be real.

But really, this book should be dedicated to a book I read as a child about a missionary’s 15-year-old daughter who makes it out of Burma alone — the Incident at Badamya, by Dorothy Gilman (better known for her Mrs. Pollifax mysteries). It made a deep impression on a young Oregonian, who aspired to be a writer someday. I’m treating myself to a re-read for completing this book!

So what’s next? Book 7, Power Corrupts, will be out in Spring 2025. There’s a cover preview at the end of this book, and you can pre-order it now. The court trial of the corrupt cops is now here. Justice is coming — if they can live long enough to see it.

If you liked the book, please write a review at your favorite e-book retailer. Or put in a good word for the book on your Facebook page or other social media site. E-publishing works because people sing out when they find books they like. Reviews don't have to be lengthy. Two lines about what you thought will be much appreciated.

I have more books! There’s a list at the end of this book — you can see which ones you might have missed. Look for them at your favorite e-book retailer. And sign up for my newsletter, Telling Stories to get the first announcement of future books, and other things — like that alternative ending.... There’s a free Mac Davis short story as a signing bonus.

Thanks again for reading.
