About the Author

Sharon Zardetto is a well-known and widely read author who started her computer-writing career just before the Mac arrived on the scene, at which point she realized where she belonged.

Her many hundreds of magazine credits span Macworld magazine’s first and last years of print publication, and include many other magazines along the way. She has written more than 30 books, starting with one about programming a computer with 2K of internal memory (that’s not a typo: 2K, with a 16K RAM pack add-on later), a membrane keyboard, a black-and-white television monitor and cassette-tape storage. This book was written on a laptop Mac with 16 GB of memory and a terabyte of storage: that’s 8 million times as much memory and more than a gazillion times as much storage capacity.

Acknowledgments

I want to thank my guinea pigs for the Numbers Tutorial chapter, especially two of my favorite teenagers ever, Grace and Elijah Domine. My friend Harvey Susswein double-checked my boiled-down explanations of when to use what charts; I hope he’s grateful for having the chance to give that Wharton degree a little exercise.

As I said in my last Take Control book, I’d also like to thank my husband, Rich Wolfson, who never actually reads my books. Someone tipped him off about that, so let me say this: I know who you are.

A writer can never be a writer without an editor, and I was lucky enough to have three in the course of this project: Scholle McFarland, with whom I also worked for years when she was with Macworld magazine; Lauri Reinhardt, the pickiest—I mean, the most detail-oriented—editor I’ve met in decades; and, as always, Tonya Engst who also, more than anyone, had to put up with my ever-unpredictable schedule of availability. The pie chart in the Editing a Chart topic that has their names in it should not be construed as any kind of comparative commentary; the numbers were randomly generated.
