To hear negative or self-defeating thoughts is not a sign that you should change course—that you’re a failure or completely crazy. It’s an indication that you are venturing into uncharted territory. It is new and exciting…but also scary. Instead of thinking of the inner voice as cruel, think of it as an older sibling or parent figure trying to protect you: It has good intentions in trying to keep you in the realm of everything known.
