LUCA

Martin was pacing the kitchen when they got home.

“What’s wrong?” Charlotte said.

“I have something to show you.”

He left the room.

Luca turned to her.

He shrugged, and said, “I have no idea.”

Martin came back carrying a large green book. Luca reached for it. Martin turned away from him and handed it to Charlotte. She read the title out loud and watched Luca’s eyes widen.

“Who?” Martin barked.

“Give me that,” Luca snapped, and snatched the book out of Charlotte’s hands.

He fanned through it. Inside, caught deep within the pages, he found a bookmark. He pulled it out. It was from Rizzoli, the bookstore on Madison Avenue. He turned the bookmark over and when he saw the name and the endearment spelled out in capital letters—LOVE—his stomach untwisted. He held it up so they both could read it. Martin’s face colored.

“I adore you Martin, but sometimes you’re a god damned fool.”
