Red-fronted Parakeet
Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae
Anders Erikson Sparrman was the first to describe the species, in 1787.
Cyanoramphus combines the Greek kuanos (dark blue) with rhamphos (bill);
novaezelandiae refers to New Zealand, where the parrot was first collected.
William T. Cooper, Red-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) 1971
Author’s note: The Red-fronted Parakeet of Macquarie Island, Cyanorhamphos novaezelandia erythrotis, was a subspecies of the Red-fronted Parakeet of New Zealand or perhaps a full species in itself. It lived alongside penguins among the low vegetation of Macquarie Island, which is about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. The introduction of cats, rabbits, rats and mice to the island and the shooting of the bird for food by sealers led to its demise around 1890.
