Chapter 2

Proportion

Self-guided face mapping is a method of sketching that allows you to draw a face in generally correct proportions from your imagination. I’ve spent many hours simplifying this process to break it down easily to share with others. When I began my own pursuit, I didn’t use any face-mapping lines. Then, when I found my work transitioning from “cute” flat faces to those with a more realistic look, I was studying the wide array of fine-art techniques and thought, “Wow, there must be a simpler way to get the look of realism but still retain a stylized look and not have to try to remember a bunch of rules.” This book is my answer to my own search. It’s what came from all of those hours of play and experimentation boiled down to an easy-to-learn process.
