Neutral Color Mixing

It’s easy and fun to create a portrait color palette using Caran d’Ache Neocolor ll water-soluble crayons. This easy-to-use medium can be applied over acrylic paints, giving it great versatility for the mixed-media artist. Using just three primary colors plus white will give you a great portrait palette.

MATERIALS

Caran d’Ache Neocolor II: Carmine, Ochre, Prussian Blue

no. 8 round

watercolor paper

pencil

Mixed Media Adhesive or other gel medium

STEP 1: Draw a simple color wheel to try out the colors in their original state. Color directly onto the color wheel and activate with a wet brush.

STEP 2: Draw a small circle on your sample page. Color equal amounts of the primary-colored Neocolor ll crayons onto a palette. Use a wet brush dipped into Mixed Media Adhesive or other gel medium and mix to form a gray color. Paint this in the small circle on your sample page.

STEP 3: Mix an equal amount of the gray color mix with a primary color to form the neutral of that color, and paint it on a new color wheel. Do this for each of the three primary colors.

Setting Water-Soluble Crayon

When you add Mixed Media Adhesive or another gel medium to water-soluble crayon, it sets the crayon, making it permanent and allowing you to paint over the top of it when it’s dry.
