2 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
½ cup whole milk
½ cup shortening
½ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup flaked coconut
½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
In a large saucepan combine the brown sugar, milk, shortening, and salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. Boil 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool slightly. Add the cocoa powder, oatmeal, coconut, and nuts, if desired. Drop the batter by teaspoonsful onto waxed paper. Let stand until firm. Store in a covered container.
