1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¾ cup sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons plus ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, divided
½ cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons melted butter
¾ cup chopped nuts
¾ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1¼ cups very hot water
Unsweetened whipped cream (optional)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of the cocoa powder. Add the milk, vanilla, and butter. Mix until smooth. Add the nuts, mixing well. Pour into an 8 × 8-inch baking pan. In a small bowl mix the brown sugar and the remaining ¼ cup cocoa powder and sprinkle evenly over the batter. Pour the hot water over the entire mixture. Do not stir. Bake 40 to 45 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
