About the Authors

Marcia Hughes, J.D., M.A., is president of Collaborative Growth®, L.L.C., and serves as a strategic communications partner for teams and their leaders in organizations that value high performers. She weaves her expertise in emotional intelligence throughout her consulting work, facilitation, team building, and workshops to help people motivate themselves and communicate more effectively with others. Her keynotes are built around powerful stories of how success can grow when people work collaboratively. Marcia and her partner, James Terrell, are authors of The Team Emotional and Social Intelligence Survey® (TESI® and TESI® Short), an online team assessment. She is co-editor of The Handbook for Developing Emotional Intelligence (2009), co-author of Developing Emotional Intelligence: Exercises for Leaders and Teams (2010), A Facilitator’s Guide to Team Emotional and Social Intelligence, (2009), A Coach’s Guide for Emotional Intelligence (2008), The Emotionally Intelligent Team (2007), Emotional Intelligence in Action (2005), and author of Life’s 2% Solution (2006). Marcia works with many diverse clients, including American Express, Medtronic, the World Bank, the Office of Personnel Management, and the Department of Agriculture.

Marcia is a certified trainer in the TESI®, and the EQ-I2.0® and EQ360®. She provides train-the-trainer training and coaching in powerful EI delivery. Her efforts to improve productivity in the workplace through strategic communication grew out of a distinguished career in law, where her firm specialized in complex public policy matters. She also served as an assistant attorney general and clerked on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals for the Honorable William E. Doyle.

James Bradford Terrell is vice president of Collaborative Growth, where he applies his expertise in interpersonal communication to help a variety of public- and private-sector clients anticipate change and respond resiliently. Co-author of the Team Emotional and Social Intelligence Survey®, (TESI®), Emotional Intelligence in Action, The Emotionally Intelligent Team, and A Coaches Guide to Emotional Intelligence, he coaches leaders, teams in transition, and senior management, using the EQ-i®, the EQ360®, the TESI®, Emergenetics®, and other assessments.

He worked as a psychotherapist in private practice for many years, seeing primarily clients who were seeking to resolve conflict in relationships—with their spouses, children, parents, employers, and/or co-workers. For three years, he was executive director of the Syntropy Institute, a not-for-profit research organization investigating how communication training impacts human effectiveness. He also served as the director of training for the Metro-Denver Mutual Housing Association, an early developer of cooperative housing.

In a previous life, he was the owner/operator of Integrity Building Systems, a construction company specializing in residential and commercial renovation and served as a project coordinator on a wide variety of projects, including Denver International Airport and the National Digital Cable Television Center.
