This book almost killed me.
It took at least three times longer to write than my other novels. It wasn’t that Atticus was a tough character to write, just the opposite in fact, but external factors kind of put writing on the back burner for a bit. First Covid hit, and here in Melbourne, Australia we were the world’s most locked down city. Fun times. Then we had to cancel our wedding and honeymoon to the Maldives. But fear not – my lovely now wife and I had a sneaky Vegas style wedding. And it was awesome. Then, my amazing wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Month after month of chemo, recovery, surgeries and everything else meant writing wasn’t exactly my number one priority. But all throughout, even on her lowest days, Kristi encouraged me to get some words down. And I did. So even though the first Atticus Wolfe novel took a long time to fully form, he was always in the background, patiently waiting for his story to unfold.
Since then, Kristi is doing amazingly well. She’s one hell of a strong woman and of course the person this book is dedicated to. She’s everything.
And ladies, check your boobs!
Now for the acknowledgements.
What more can I say about my beautiful wife? Monkey heart unicorn.
To my remarkable girls, Quinn and Esther, a BIG thank you for supporting my writing and still getting excited when they see a new cover or when I show them a good day on the book rankings. I love that they both write their own books and adore reading as much as I do.
As always, thanks to the G-Mob, my writing tribe. The G-Mob are amazing writers and even better friends. Craig, Justin, Luke, Nathan, Steve, Kat, Amanda and Amanda, thank you for your support, encouragement and laughs.
A big thank you to my editor Vanessa Lanaway for her talented and speedy work. She really does make me sound like I know what I’m doing.
Thanks to Phil Poole who did an incredible job on the covers for the Atticus Wolfe series. He not only nailed the brief I gave but knocked it out of the park!
There’s a sneaky reference in the novel of Susan Palinosky. She won a competition in my VIP Book Club to be murdered horribly. Congrats (?!) again Susan!
And to my fabulous Book Ninjas who receive an advance copy of my novels – thank you for the amazing feedback! You guys are brilliant.
