As a committed adventurer, you need a hero’s mount—one with speed, courage, strength, mobility, and endurance.
Select the qualities of your steed, ensuring they have at least one A, B, C, D, and E.
SPEED
A. Your mount is the fastest creature of its kind. It is capable of routinely pulling off feats described as impossible. If time is of the essence, this beast is up to the task.
B. Your mount has only been bested in a contest of speed once or twice. When other adventurers discuss the fastest beasts in the land, yours is always mentioned.
C. Your beast is dependably swift. While it is no racing mount, you have always made good time on its back. It has the normal limitations of creatures of its type.
D. Although this creature is reliable in other ways, it will win no prize for speed. It always lags behind other beasts.
E. This creature is reliable but slow. Your journeys always take longer than you think they will.
COURAGE
A. Your beast is undaunted in the face of apocalyptic cataclysm. Even if it is not intelligent enough to grasp the importance of your work, it pursues your mission with unwavering focus. Sometimes its courage outstrips your own.
B. In the heat of battle, this beast is fearless. It can only be turned by events that would break most humanoids.
C. This creature is reliable in battle and storm, but there are some situations that reduce it to its base instincts.
D. While this beast can be relied upon for hauling and long trips, at the first sign of battle, it will spook and possibly cause damage.
E. This creature is a natural-born coward. It will run or hide at the first sign of trouble and a few signs that aren’t.
STRENGTH
A. With the proper harness, this creature could move mountains. It can do the work of an army of draft horses, all without complaint or ceremony.
B. This creature is worth more than a dozen creatures of its type, able to move tons of weight without proper rigging. It is the wonder and envy of everyone.
C. Your partner is capable of handling a large amount of weight but not much more than another creature of its type. Over your years together, there have been more than a few challenges well beyond its capability.
D. This is not a creature built for labor. It can handle smaller tasks, but you know you can’t charge it with work meant for most creatures of its kind.
E. There is little use for this creature beyond riding and perhaps carrying some small personal effects.
MOBILITY
A. There is no terrain or condition that can turn this beast. It can cut through water, air, and the worst the land has to offer. This creature could reliably ride through an earthquake, an erupting volcano, and a hurricane all at once.
B. Even in inclement conditions, this beast can be trusted to protect you and itself. It is not capable of producing miracles, but there are some who insist that it does.
C. You feel comfortable taking this creature into many difficult situations. However, you are aware it has the normal limitations of other creatures of its type.
D. This creature has an injury or inherent weakness that makes it vulnerable in certain situations. You are careful to watch over it and must think carefully about when you decide to rely on it.
E. It might be age or injury, but there is something that makes this creature vulnerable to inclement conditions. Without perfect conditions, this creature runs the serious risk of injury.
ENDURANCE
A. This beast can work on until the earth beneath it grinds to oblivion. It will fight through any injury with fierce determination. As long as it has breath to draw and a heart to beat, it will move.
B. This creature can work longer than most would even be able to watch. With little rest, food, or water, it can do the work of many creatures of its type.
C. This beast is admirable, but it has the limitations of most mortal beings. Without proper care, it will tire.
D. While it is dependable once or twice a day, any sustained effort will make this creature tire.
E. Due to age, injury, or perhaps laziness, this beast is all but useless. It will not move for anyone but you.
