5 Tuesday Mardi Week 14
Often when I walk by Chanel on rue Cambon, I hear someone say, “I LOVE Chanel.” I wonder how she would have felt having all this admiration thrust upon her. She, of course, is worthy of such admiration, being the mastermind behind one of the world’s most recognized brands. She is said to have liberated women from the “corseted silhouette,” for which I am thankful. If you’ve ever squeezed yourself into a pair of Spanx, you know what I’m talking about. Shopkeepers at Chanel claim to have sensed her presence in the store, usually during the quiet time after the store closes. If I were Chanel, there is no place I’d rather haunt.
She also created Chanel No. 5, the most popular perfume in the world. She says she came up with the name because it was the fifth scent she tried and liked. Ever after, 5 became her lucky number. So it should come as no surprise that when you walk into her flagship shop on rue Cambon, you will see a chandelier she had custom designed … made of iron stamped into the iconic #5.
