USS Alexandria and US Ram General Price, two vessels of the Union’s Mississippi River Squadron depicted in watercolor by Ensign D. M. N. Stouffer, ca. 1864–65. Ironically, both these boats were originally Confederate vessels. CSS Alexandria was captured at Yazoo City, Mississippi, in July 1863. General Price was the Southern ram General Sterling Price (after the Confederate general) until it was sunk during the Union conquest of Memphis. Raised by the Federals, its name was shortened when it was placed in Federal service.
