Two pages from a scrapbook kept by former Confederate general Jubal A. Early. After spending some time in Cuba and Canada, Early returned to the United States and reestablished his law practice. Never reconciled to defeat, he was a firm supporter of the “Lost Cause” mythology that idealized Southern life and the Confederate cause. The left-hand page features a list of contributors from one Virginia town “for an equestrian statue of General Robert E. Lee, to be erected in the Capitol grounds at Richmond.”
