Chapter 21

Victims Three and Four

A black wall of storm clouds could be seen crawling in from the west as they all gathered back inside the mansion’s sunroom. It was hurricane season in the tropics, after all. As they stared out the window at the ominous-looking clouds of an approaching storm, the two bodies were removed from the hot tub and taken to the morgue.

By that point, they had all easily figured out who the victims had been, even though none of them had been able to tell outside with the victims facedown and the cloak of thick steam blocking any clear view of the hot tub. With only seven guests now remaining, they didn’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce who was no longer with them.

“This ain’t fair. Kyle wasn’t even Scared—how can he be killed?” Gary demanded. “I thought there were rules to this game.”

“There are rules,” Giles said calmly. “And nowhere in the rules does it state that there may not be collateral damage from any of these murders. Let this be a lesson for you going forward to be careful with whom you associate.”

Kyle and Tiffany were the only two guests not present, which meant that they had been the two bodies in the hot tub. And it made sense; it certainly wasn’t the first time they’d snuck off to be in a hot tub together.

But perhaps more than anything, for most of the guests, Kyle’s dying represented true apprehension moving forward. Now that the most likely suspect was apparently dead, it meant that the killer really could be any of the remaining seven guests. Thus, they eyed one another warily as they waited for Giles to announce the three investigative locations for the murder.

“Please, take ten minutes to go make yourselves presentable,” Giles said. “When you return, you will be asked to decide which area you’d like to investigate: the crime scene, the morgue, or the last known whereabouts of our victims, which in this case was Mr. Luger’s suite. Choose wisely, because with each passing murder, you’re getting one step closer to possibly surviving!”
