Chapter 56

Death Discovered

Following the map was somewhat difficult since it was so basic and rudimentary. Additionally, trekking through the wild growth was far more difficult than walking along the island’s paths. But Cliff pushed on, using his spade to chop through vines and bushes like it was some kind of sad, miniature machete.

It didn’t take him as long as he expected to reach the approximate spot of the X on his map. The fact that he’d found the right place became horrifyingly obvious when he stepped into a small clearing and was face-to-face with a massive python chained to a nearby tree by its tail.

Was this it? Was this the death the card had alluded to? Had he really picked the wrong path?

The snake rose up suddenly, taking an aggressive posture. Whether it was or wasn’t meant to be the death at the end of his incorrect path, Cliff was still going to go down fighting either way. He raised his spade and held his ground as the python lunged toward him.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the island, Cathy had just arrived at the X on her map. She knew she was in the right spot because a massive black X had been recently painted on the pool’s maintenance shed.

And just then she knew she’d grabbed the right weapon and was going to win this. She stood there staring at the locked wooden door and then at her axe. She grinned and then pulled back the axe.

Cathy swung it forward from the side, aiming directly for the large black X painted on the door. The axe punctured the door easily and then there was a loud clank as the blade hit something metal just inside the door.

She barely had time to react as a green gas poured from the opening. Even if she hadn’t taken in a quick, gasping inhale of shock, the anhydrous still would have killed her. In fact, that one quick gasp made it all seem that much more merciful.

But either way, Cathy was dead within minutes of swinging the axe.

And then, suddenly, there were two: a winner and a killer.
